New Century Schoolbook font is a very legible font, fairly narrow and with relatively little stroke contrast. This font is from Morris F. Benton and appeared in 1915. Under the commission of the American Century Magazine', Linn Boyd Benton designed a new text typeface in 1894 with a design typical of the Neorenaissance.

I typically use New Century Schoolbook as my font. Word 2010 seems to have an embedded font that is similar, but not as readable, called NewCenturySchlbk. It often spontaneously substitutes the latter for the former. The really bizarre thing is that the NewCenturySchlbk does not even show up in the Windows/Fonts folder, and a search of the entire computer doesn't turn up anything. Does anyone (Susan Barnhill leaps to mind since as far as I can tell she knows everything there is to know about Office) know where to find it and how I can get rid of that font permanently? I did a quick test, and in my installations of Word 2013, 2010, 2007 and 2003, these fonts all are available. Also, in the Microsoft Word Web App, these fonts are available. The New Century Schoolbook font is used rarely, compared to the above seven fonts. In general, I would recommend that anyone use fonts that are in popular general use, and avoid rarely used fonts. One way to tell how popular a font is, is to do a web search, and see how many hits you get. For example, Times New Roman gets about 38,000,000 web hits. New Century Schoolbook gets about 60,000 web hits.
I used Google for this web search. My idea is that by choosing among the most popular of the fonts, this will avoid various problems that can happen, due to using a font that is rarely used. I produce camera-ready work for my publisher, and the publisher requires New Century Schoolbook and Microsoft Word format. Now check the Fonts folder for other similarly named fonts; you can search the folder for 'Century' or 'Schoolbook' to find them. Perhaps you can find the interfering font (which will presumably not be the Century Schoolbook that is installed with Office) and uninstall it. As for New Century Schoolbook, this is a commercial font that you would have to purchase (see ). If you've already purchased it, then it should also show up in your Fonts folder.
