I usually use sleep (sometimes hibernate), and either way Win 8 (and 8.1) can't handle it. I do have an unwieldy workaround - normally I leave the card reader disabled. When I want to use it (primarily to snag pics from a camera card), I enable it, works just fine.

When done, I 'eject' the card (in software) and disable. A pain, but I get to use it. This makes it pretty impractical to use for ReadyBoost though, I don't want to have to be going thru that on EVERY sleep cycle.
